TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF MUSIC THEORY
The New Lexicon seeks neither to codify an authoritative philosophy of music theory nor to determine in advance what such a philosophy must be. A field concerned with theoretical practice must remain responsive to objects and methods that differ in medium, history, repertoire, epistemology, culture, and institutional location. Its concepts must be precise without claiming universality, open to revision without losing critical force, and capable of addressing the singularity of musical experience and the structures through which knowledge becomes possible.
The programme aims to establish conditions for multiple philosophies of music theory to emerge: philosophies generated through inquiry, sharpened through critique, tested through listening, and revised through encounter. They may disagree about the identity of objects, the status of evidence, the relation between perception and representation, the aims of explanation, or the responsibilities of theory. Their value need not lie in convergence, but in their capacity to clarify what is at stake and renew the languages through which theory understands its work.
To develop a new lexicon is to make new distinctions possible, but also to become accountable for those already in use. It is to ask what our concepts allow us to hear and know, what they prevent us from recognising, which histories they preserve, and how theoretical practice might transform the terms of its intelligibility. The residency begins from this task and invites participants to undertake it collectively, with rigour, generosity, and attention to the consequences of naming.
